Nigeria launches $1bn HOPE social protection programme

The Nigerian Federal Government has launched a $1 billion social protection initiative titled the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP). Unveiled at the State House in Abuja, the program aims to transition vulnerable citizens from temporary palliatives to sustainable economic self-reliance.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu presented the initiative alongside four other programs: the One-Humanitarian-One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), the Emergency Cash Transfer Programme, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Ministerial Blueprint, and the Humanity First Magazine.

Senator Tinubu noted that these initiatives are intended to support families facing challenges resulting from the administration’s ongoing economic reforms. The HOPE-SP project specifically focuses on improving the identification of vulnerable households and assessing their specific needs to provide both immediate stabilization and long-term pathways toward economic recovery.
