Nigeria launches AgriConnect Compact to transform agriculture

Nigeria has launched the AgriConnect Compact, a national framework designed to transform the country’s agricultural sector, enhance food security, and create jobs. The initiative is a collaboration between Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the World Bank Group, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Over the next five years, the Compact aims to improve food and nutrition security for approximately three million people and generate more than 2.5 million jobs. The program focuses on strengthening agricultural ecosystems by improving market linkages, enhancing access to finance, and supporting digital solutions for smallholder farmers to transition from subsistence to surplus production.

In a related development, the Nigerian government has inaugurated the Coalition of Farmers Associations for Food Security (COA-FARMERS). This coalition is intended to serve as a platform for identifying agricultural challenges and improving information flow between farmers and the government. This move follows reports that Nigeria’s agriculture sector recorded a 4.39 per cent growth in the second quarter of 2026, its strongest performance since 2021.
