Nigeria launches digital portal for birth and death certificate applications

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a digital self‑service platform, developed by the National Population Commission (NPC) and announced by the National Orientation Agency (NOA). The portal enables citizens to register births and deaths, apply for birth attestations, correct civil‑registration records and verify certificates online, reducing queues and paperwork.

Birth registration at NPC centres remains free for children under five, while online applications incur a ₦5,000 processing fee. Applicants must provide a National Identification Number, confirm the child was born in Nigeria and have at least one Nigerian parent with a valid birth certificate. Certificates can be downloaded once; reprints require a separate request.

Death registration is free. The informant must supply a NIN and provide the deceased’s personal details, place and cause of death, occupation, marital status, literacy level and residence. The initiative aims to give Nigerians legal identity and improve access to health, education, passports, banking and other government programmes.
