Nigeria launches digital postcode system linked to national ID
The Federal Government of Nigeria has revived its long‑delayed national digital postcode project, integrating it with the National Identification Number (NIN) system. A strategic partnership between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) will assign a unique GIS‑enabled alphanumeric address to every building, linking each citizen’s verified identity with a confirmed physical location. The rollout is expected to improve identity verification for banks, streamline KYC processes, boost e‑commerce and logistics, enhance targeting of social programmes, and support emergency response. Funding has been secured and all ministries have been directed to incorporate the digital postcode system into their operations.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, speaking on World Population Day, urged Nigerians to register for a NIN, stressing that an accurate population database is essential for effective planning and service delivery. She highlighted how the digital postcode initiative complements the NIN by providing reliable location data, which together can improve public service delivery, human‑capital development, and economic inclusion across the country.
