Nigeria launches Greater Zuma Geopark Initiative

Nigeria has initiated a national geopark movement following the conclusion of the First Nigeria Workshop on Geoparks and the launch of the Greater Zuma Geopark Initiative. Held on August 17-18, 2026, at the Zuma Rock Geopark and Resort in Niger State, the event was a collaborative effort between the Zuma Rock Geopark and Resort and the Niger State Government.

The workshop convened a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from government, academia, the private sector, and various geoscience professional bodies. Key participants included the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), which provided data on the country’s geoheritage potential, and the National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM), which offered guidance on future UNESCO engagement procedures.

Discussions also involved the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP) Nigeria National Committee to promote technical guidelines and global best practices. Additionally, representatives from the National Assembly’s House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals Development explored potential legislative measures to protect and conserve Nigeria’s vulnerable geoheritage resources.
