Nigeria financial sector moves toward domestic cloud hosting by 2027
Nigeria’s financial services sector is preparing for a January 1, 2027, deadline mandated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to host primary data and critical transaction backups within national borders. This regulatory shift aims to ensure data residency, enhance national security, and provide the state with legal jurisdiction over sensitive economic data during audits or judicial proceedings.
To facilitate this transition, companies like MTN Nigeria are developing local infrastructure and sovereign cloud solutions. MTN Nigeria’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Lynda Saint-Nwafor, stated that local hosting will provide lower latency and faster response times while keeping sensitive financial and government data within the country. The directive is expected to reduce the estimated $850 million that currently leaves Nigeria annually to support foreign cloud dependencies.
The move is driving increased demand for local Tier III and Tier IV data centers, with providers such as Rack Centre, MainOne, and MDXi facing pressure to expand capacity. Many institutions are expected to adopt hybrid or sovereign cloud models to maintain the scalability of global platforms while ensuring the storage layer remains domestic.
