Nigeria launches National Digital Postcode System

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has launched a National Digital Postcode System to provide addressable buildings across the country with unique 11-character alphanumeric digital identities. Using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled platform, the system categorizes locations through five levels: state, local government, district, area, and individual building.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, stated the system is intended to assist small businesses in reaching customers, improve emergency response times, and help public agencies deliver essential services. The initiative follows the Federal Executive Council's approval of the National Digital Addressing Policy and Digital Postcode System in March 2026.

Despite the intended benefits for e-commerce, logistics, and national security, the rollout has prompted privacy concerns. Reports indicate that the registration and verification process within the application may expose homeowner names.
