Nigeria launches NEDI platform to track learners and combat miracle schools

The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has unveiled the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), a cloud‑based, AI‑enabled platform that integrates data from basic, secondary, technical, vocational and tertiary institutions, as well as major examination bodies such as JAMB, WAEC, NEC and NELFUND. Minister of Education Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa said the system will serve as a single source of truth for education planning, reduce out‑of‑school children and provide a National Learner Identity Number (NLIN) linked to the national ID.

The NLIN is intended to monitor each child’s progress from enrolment through graduation and into employment, helping to eliminate fraudulent “miracle centres” and support entrepreneurship training. Over 32 million learners and more than 220 000 schools across 21 states have already been captured on the platform.

Stakeholders, including Minister of Women Affairs Hajia Imaan Sulaiman‑Ibrahim, highlighted the initiative’s role in child protection, girls’ education and social inclusion, and credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for backing the reform.
