Muslim communities celebrate Mawlid al-Nabi with calls for peace
Muslim communities across Africa and parts of Asia are observing Mawlid al-Nabi, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The festivities are characterized by religious devotion, communal prayers, and calls for social harmony.
In West Africa, celebrations include ceremonies in Guinea, where Honorable Elhadj Bouna Keïta emphasized national cohesion and peace. In Côte d'Ivoire, Imam Adam Sanousy Bancé urged the youth to adopt the Prophet’s values of trustworthiness and solidarity. Nigeria has seen various leaders and clerics, such as Sheikh Ibrahim Olaniyi, calling for interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence.
In North Africa, Morocco and Tunisia hosted vibrant celebrations featuring traditional music and processions. In Egypt, the Ministry of Endowments released a book on the Prophet’s characteristics translated into twenty languages to spread messages of mercy. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the day was marked by public holidays, gun salutes in major cities, and widespread religious processions.
Across these regions, religious leaders have consistently used the occasion to advocate for unity, tolerance, and the rejection of extremism, framing the Prophet’s life as a model for ethical conduct and social stability.
