Nigeria manages N160tn in public allocations amid economic and legislative challenges

Nigeria faces significant economic challenges, including soaring inflation, mass unemployment, and failing infrastructure, despite massive public revenue inflows. Over the past 27 years since the return to democratic governance in 1999, the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) has distributed an estimated N160 trillion among the federal, state, and local governments.

Under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which assumed office in May 2023, more than N56 trillion has been distributed through FAAC. This represents approximately 35 percent of the total amount shared since 1999. Recent increases in monthly allocations are attributed to the removal of the fuel subsidy in June 2023, crude oil earnings, Value Added Tax (VAT), and other federally collected revenues.

Separately, the Nigerian Senate has passed a bill proposing a ₦50,000 fine for preaching, hawking, or trading inside commercial vehicles as part of a road safety framework. The move has raised concerns regarding civil liberties and religious expression, with critics questioning whether the legislation targets dangerous conduct or unnecessarily constrains constitutional freedoms.
