Nigeria marks 60th anniversary of Aguiyi‑Ironsi’s death, calls for unity
Nigeria commemorated the 60th anniversary of the death of its first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi‑Ironsi, with a wreath‑laying ceremony at the Aguiyi‑Ironsi Cenotaph in Umuahia, Abia State. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented by Defence Minister General Christopher Musa, while Abia Governor Alex Otti, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former First Lady Patience Jonathan and other dignitaries also attended.
During the event, Governor Otti urged Nigerians to strengthen national unity, justice and accountability. The Aguiyi‑Ironsi family, led by nephew Imo Aguiyi‑Ironsi, used the occasion to demand a formal government apology and compensation for the 1966 assassination of the late general, asserting that he “died for no crime.”
Aguiyi‑Ironsi had served as Head of State for six months after the January 1966 coup before being killed in the July 1966 counter‑coup.
