Nigeria marks 66th Independence Anniversary with economic reform focus
Nigeria is marking its 66th Independence Anniversary with a nationwide public holiday declared by the Federal Government. In his Independence Day address, President Bola Tinubu declared that the nation has entered an “age of prosperity,” signaling a shift from the difficult phase of economic reforms to a focus on job creation and reducing the cost of living.
Tinubu defended his administration’s controversial decisions, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market, using a medical analogy. He compared the country to a cancer patient that required painful treatment to address underlying structural issues rather than relying on “morphine” to mask symptoms. Government officials, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, reaffirmed that the administration will not return to the “ruinous” petroleum subsidy regime.
While the government highlights economic indicators like GDP growth, the anniversary has also drawn criticism. Journalist Dele Momodu described the President’s speech as a “day of lamentation,” questioning the impact of reforms on rising poverty and insecurity. Religious leaders and citizens have also used the occasion to call for national unity, peace, and accountability to overcome the country's socio-economic challenges.
