Nigeria marks 66th Independence amid political debate over economic reforms

As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, political leaders and officials have presented sharply contrasting views on the nation's current state and future trajectory.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed optimism, stating that the country is moving past the difficult phase of economic reforms and entering an “age of prosperity.” He argued that while reforms have caused hardship, they are necessary to correct long-standing economic distortions.

In contrast, opposition figures have issued stern criticisms. Peter Obi described Nigeria as the “worst place to be born,” citing extreme poverty affecting over 140 million people, high youth unemployment, and significant numbers of out-of-school children. Atiku Abubakar characterized the current period as the most severe cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria's history, specifically pointing to the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

Other leaders, including Governor Peter Mbah and various state officials, have called for national unity, resilience, and continued commitment to development despite the prevailing economic and security challenges.
