Nigeria marks International Youth Day with leadership and security initiatives

In observance of International Youth Day 2026, various Nigerian organizations are calling for increased support and engagement for the nation's youth, who comprise over half of the population. Under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” stakeholders are emphasizing the need for equitable access to education, employment, and leadership opportunities.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced a three-day program from August 20 to 22 aimed at strengthening police-youth partnerships and responsible citizenship. The initiative includes leadership dialogues, entrepreneurship showcases, and campaigns to discourage political thuggery and digital misinformation. The NPF also plans to launch a reorientation resource to support youth empowerment.

Additionally, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP-Nigeria) has urged greater investment in youth leadership and civic participation to foster sustainable peace. While acknowledging challenges such as unemployment and insecurity, WANEP highlighted the resilience of young Nigerians in community development and humanitarian response.
