Nigeria marriage debate erupts over controversial social media advice

Social media users in Nigeria are engaged in a debate following controversial remarks regarding marriage from a religious leader and a content creator.

Pastor Tunde Ayeni sparked discussion by advising individuals not to marry solely based on love. He suggested that people should instead “learn to love the person they marry,” arguing that marrying for love can make a person “a slave” to their partner through over-dependence. While some users agreed that love alone is insufficient for a successful marriage, others argued that genuine love does not necessitate a loss of identity.

In a separate online video, a Nigerian woman advised men against marriage, characterizing the role of a husband as an “unpayable job.” She argued that husbands take on various professional-level responsibilities—such as security, driving, and emotional management—without financial compensation. She compared these duties to paid roles in security, transportation, and human resources, suggesting the mental and physical loads placed on husbands are disproportionate to the rewards.
