Nigeria mental health crisis affects 60 million people
Dr. Veronica Nyamali, President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN), has reported that approximately 60 million Nigerians—one in four citizens—are living with mental health challenges. These challenges include mood disorders, anxiety, stress, trauma-related disorders, and personality or behavioral disorders.
Dr. Nyamali noted that social pressure and stigma frequently prevent individuals from seeking necessary help. The disclosure comes alongside advocacy from psychiatrists and support groups for the full implementation of the Mental Health Act. There are also ongoing calls for the National Assembly to pass a bill aimed at decriminalizing attempted suicide, proposing that imprisonment be replaced with medical treatment, rehabilitation, and psychological support.
