Nigeria coup plot trials: Courts set dates for key evidence rulings

Legal proceedings regarding an alleged coup plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu have reached critical stages in Nigeria. The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled a ruling for December 7 to decide on the admissibility of evidence, including statements and video recordings, presented by the Federal Government.

The government has charged six defendants—including retired Major General Mohammed Gana and retired Navy Captain Erasmus Victor—with 13 counts ranging from treason and terrorism to money laundering. Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva is also implicated but remains at large.

In a separate but related development, the General Court Martial has postponed its ruling on the admissibility of statements made by accused military officers for the fourth time. The ruling, originally expected in September, is now set for October 5. Defence lawyers in the military trial allege that officers were coerced or intimidated by the Defence Intelligence Agency into providing false statements and have challenged the legality of the interrogation process.
