Nigeria Minority Caucus urges President Tinubu to act on northern insecurity
The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate and decisive action to address the escalating terrorism and banditry in Northern Nigeria. In a joint statement, Caucus Leader Hon. Fredrick Agbedi and Spokesperson Hon. Afam Ogene warned that the frequency and scale of attacks have become intolerable, affecting communities in Plateau, Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina, and Borno states.
Lawmakers highlighted several recent violent incidents, including the deaths of over 20 people in Plateau State’s Mangu Local Government Area and at least 40 people, including a Chief Imam, in Sokoto State’s Ungushi community. In Niger State, more than 60 worshippers were reportedly abducted during Friday prayers. The caucus also noted the ongoing distress in Borno State, where schoolchildren have remained missing for nearly 100 days.
To combat the crisis, the Caucus urged the Federal Government to move beyond routine condemnations and implement intelligence-led security operations. One proposal includes drawing $5 billion from the nation’s external reserves to fund an emergency national security intervention.
