Nigeria's Pioneering Linguist Ayo Bamgbose Dies at 94

Professor Ayo Bamgbose, Nigeria’s first professor of linguistics, died at the age of 94. Born in 1932 in Odopotu, Ogun State, he earned his early education in Nigeria before completing a PhD in linguistics at the University of Edinburgh in 1963. He joined the University of Ibadan, where he helped establish linguistics as an academic discipline and authored seminal works such as the Grammar of Yoruba (1966) and Fonologi ati Girama Yoruba.

Bamgbose’s research shaped language policy, bilingual education, and the promotion of indigenous African languages, particularly Yoruba. He served in leadership roles for national and international linguistic bodies, received numerous honors—including honorary membership of the Linguistic Society of America—and mentored generations of scholars. Tributes described him as an intellectual giant and tireless advocate for mother‑tongue education.
