Nigerian National Assembly extends 2025 capital budget deadline

The Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives have approved an extension for the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act. The new deadline is set for December 31, 2026, moving it from the previous expiration date of September 30, 2026.

This marks the fourth time the National Assembly has extended the implementation period for this specific budget cycle. Lawmakers stated the extension is necessary to prevent the abandonment of ongoing infrastructure and development projects and to allow ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) sufficient time to complete works for which funds have already been appropriated and released.

During the debates, officials cited economic difficulties and administrative bottlenecks, such as the centralized payment system, as factors contributing to the delays. While the extension aims to ensure project completion, some analysts and lawmakers have expressed concern over the repeated practice of extending budget lifespans, noting that previous administration promises to end overlapping budget cycles have not been met.
