NCDC approves ₦100,000 weekly stipend for Ebola contacts in Abuja

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has approved an emergency weekly allowance of ₦100,000 for individuals placed in isolation or quarantine following a confirmed Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris announced the measure on Sunday, October 25, 2026, noting that the stipend aims to ease the financial burden on contacts who expressed concerns regarding the cost of supporting their families while under public health monitoring.

While the NCDC is already covering accommodation and feeding costs, the additional payment was introduced as an unplanned emergency measure to ensure compliance with isolation guidelines. Idris emphasized that the agency will continue to review the arrangement as the outbreak response progresses.

As of the briefing, Nigeria has recorded one confirmed imported case of the Bundibugyo strain, involving a 42-year-old woman who traveled from Uganda. Authorities have identified 53 primary contacts for monitoring, including healthcare workers, household members, and domestic staff. Recent investigations have also isolated nine additional contacts. Idris urged state governments to prepare financial and logistical resources for public health emergencies to ensure a coordinated response beyond the FCT.
