Nigeria now has nearly 40 operational vehicle assembly plants

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) reports that nearly 40 vehicle assembly plants are now operational across Nigeria. This development marks a significant shift for the country, which previously lacked functioning vehicle assembly plants.

Director-General Joseph Osanipin emphasized that the growth of the automotive sector requires increased participation from private investors rather than relying solely on government responsibility. To support the transition toward cleaner mobility, the NADDC has initiated programs for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.

The council has licensed 80 CNG conversion centers nationwide and conducted training programs for vehicle conversion and installation across all geopolitical zones. Additionally, pilot electric vehicle charging stations have been installed at several tertiary institutions, though officials have called for more private investment in charging and CNG infrastructure.
