Nigeria: Old video used to falsely claim Peter Obi march in 2026

Social media posts claiming to show a massive “One Million Walk” for Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi in Calabar in August 2026 have been identified as misinformation. The footage, which depicts a large crowd with banners and flags, was actually recorded in 2022 during the campaign for the 2023 general elections.

Fact-checkers from Africa Check used reverse image searches to confirm that the video has been online since 2022. The original march was organized by the Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO) ahead of the previous election cycle.

No reports of such a march in 2026 exist in Nigerian news media, nor has Peter Obi, the candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming January 2027 polls, posted about such an event. The recycled content resurfaced on platforms like Facebook and X with updated, false captions to suggest growing momentum for his current campaign.
