Nigeria opposition leaders demand ₦500,000 minimum wage ahead of 2027 election

Presidential hopeful Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC) called for a ₦500,000 minimum and living wage for Nigerian workers, arguing that citizens deserve dignity and that past proposals of ₦100,000 (2019) and ₦250,000 (2023) were ignored until later adopted. Sowore said the government is always years behind reality and urged the adoption of the higher floor before the 2027 general election.

Enugu State gubernatorial candidate Ocho Obodoeze of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also pledged to raise workers’ wages beyond the national minimum wage if elected. During a thanksgiving rally, Obodoeze promised higher salaries for civil servants and broader wage adjustments as part of his "Ochoudo agenda" for the 2027 election campaign.
