Nigeria confirms first Ebola case in Abuja, initiates contact tracing

Nigeria has confirmed its first case of Ebola virus disease, specifically the Bundibugyo strain, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The patient, a 42-year-old female diplomat who recently traveled from Uganda, was identified on October 20, 2026. She had arrived in Abuja via Addis Ababa on October 3 and began showing symptoms, such as fever and diarrhea, on October 7.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified 53 primary contacts, including healthcare workers, domestic staff, and the patient’s husband, chef, and driver. To encourage compliance with isolation and quarantine protocols, the NCDC has introduced an emergency weekly stipend of ₦100,000 for individuals under monitoring to help cover basic needs and family support.

While a suspected case in Rivers State tested negative, the NCDC has activated its national Incident Management System at the highest level. The outbreak is part of a broader regional situation involving the Bundibugyo strain, which originated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has seen cases reported in Kenya and Uganda.
