Nigeria partners with Sproxil to deploy AI for malaria surveillance

The National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) and Sproxil Nigeria Limited are exploring the integration of artificial intelligence and private sector data to enhance malaria surveillance in Nigeria. During a strategic alignment meeting in Lagos, officials and health experts discussed using digital technology to address significant data gaps.

Currently, much of Nigeria's malaria diagnosis and treatment occurs through community pharmacies and private providers, generating data that is often missing from national surveillance systems. To address this, Sproxil presented a nationwide digital platform designed to collect structured malaria data from private healthcare providers across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Stakeholders, including representatives from the World Health Organization and PATH, examined the use of AI-assisted rapid diagnostic test interpretation and how private-sector insights can complement existing government systems to improve the speed and accuracy of the national malaria response.
