Nigeria petrol prices fluctuate amid government relief efforts
Nigeria is facing economic tension as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) adjusts petrol prices and the government implements a temporary relief package. While NNPC recently raised pump prices to ₦1,405 per litre, it later reversed the increase to ₦1,370 per litre. However, motorists have reported difficulties accessing discounts, noting that lower rates may require using the NNPC Fuel App.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele has introduced a 30-day intervention requiring NNPC outlets to sell petrol at cost. Research firm BMI estimates this relief package could cost Nigeria between 0.2% and 0.4% of its GDP, potentially impacting government revenue and the naira. Oyedele has warned that reversing the previous petrol subsidy removal entirely could trigger massive capital flight and weaken the naira significantly.
In response to rising living costs, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and activist Femi Falana have demanded urgent government action to reduce fuel prices, arguing that current wages are insufficient to meet basic expenses. Meanwhile, the government has indicated that a proposed fuel tax will only be introduced once economic stability and household incomes improve.
