Nigeria fuel prices surge amid rising global crude costs
Nigeria is experiencing a significant cost-of-living crisis driven by rising fuel prices. Following the removal of the petrol subsidy by the Tinubu administration, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices have fluctuated heavily, recently reaching levels between N1,350 and N1,450 per litre in various regions, including Lagos and Abuja.
This surge is linked to rising international crude oil prices and tensions in the Middle East. On September 12, the Dangote Refinery increased its petrol gantry price from N1,265 to N1,350 per litre. While the refinery operates at a capacity of approximately 700,000 barrels per day, domestic prices remain highly sensitive to global market volatility.
The economic impact is widespread. Increased fuel costs have led to higher transportation fares, particularly for commercial tricycles in the Federal Capital Territory, and have placed upward pressure on food prices and inflation. Diesel prices have also climbed above N2,000 per litre, affecting businesses reliant on generators. In response, labor groups like the Nigeria Labour Congress have called for wage awards to cushion the impact on workers.
