Nigeria officials defend petrol prices amid economic reforms

Nigerian officials are defending domestic petrol prices following the removal of fuel subsidies. Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo stated that petrol in the United Kingdom costs over N3,000 per litre after currency conversion, arguing that Nigerians are currently paying less and are “doing very well.” He likened the ongoing economic reforms to an aircraft taking off, suggesting that the benefits will only be felt once the country reaches cruising altitude.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri also defended the pricing, noting that Nigeria’s average petrol cost of approximately N1,430 per litre remains lower than in the United States (N1,633), Cameroon (N1,959), Ghana (N2,070), and South Africa (N2,070). Lokpobiri emphasized that because the downstream sector is fully deregulated, the government cannot arbitrarily set pump prices, which must instead follow global market conditions.

While the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and other marketers have recently reduced depot prices due to declining international crude costs, retail prices in Nigeria continue to fluctuate between N1,370 and N1,500 per litre. Critics have challenged these comparisons, arguing that nominal price differences do not account for variations in purchasing power, income levels, and the general cost of living between Nigeria and other nations.
