Nigeria plans formal reconciliation over 1967 Asaba Massacre
The Nigerian Federal Government is expected to issue a formal reconciliation declaration regarding the 1967 Asaba Massacre, which occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori announced the plan during a 59th-anniversary memorial event in Asaba, noting that while Delta State has already acknowledged the tragedy, official federal recognition is essential for lasting reconciliation.
During the memorial, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof Epiphany Azinge, stated that the community seeks a public apology from a sitting president to achieve full closure, arguing that previous apologies from former leaders are insufficient.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also addressed the anniversary via a recorded message, urging Nigerians to embrace forgiveness while ensuring the massacre remains part of the nation's historical record. Additionally, retired Major-General Ahmed Ibrahim Taiwo, the son of a late army officer associated with the events, offered a personal apology to the community.
