Nigeria Police Chief Olatunji Disu Seeks International Backing for Major Reform Drive

Inspector‑General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu hosted a high‑level stakeholders’ dialogue at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja on May 13, 2026. The meeting brought together representatives from the United Nations Development Programme, UN Women, the British High Commission and the governments of Germany, Spain and Slovakia, as well as officials from the Police Reform Secretariat and the National Institute for Police Studies.

Disu reaffirmed the force’s commitment to become a modern, professional, intelligence‑led and accountable police service rooted in the rule of law, respect for human rights and community partnership. He emphasized that reforms aim to make the force technology‑driven and citizen‑focused to meet contemporary security challenges. Professor Olu Ogunsakin, head of the Police Reform Secretariat, outlined the reform pillars: legal and policy changes, election‑security management, leadership development, strategic stakeholder engagement, oversight mechanisms and community‑trust building. Both speakers stressed that sustained international partnerships are essential for capacity building and the long‑term success of Nigeria’s policing reforms.
