Nigeria Police investigate allegations of extortion and assault

The Nigeria Police Force has launched investigations into two separate incidents involving alleged misconduct by officers.

In Nasarawa State, two officers from the Ado Area Command have been detained at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The detention follows a viral video showing an altercation with two travellers returning from a wedding. The police Complaint Response Unit alleges the officers planted marijuana in the travellers' vehicle and demanded 150,000 Naira, consisting of 100,000 Naira for bail and 50,000 Naira for fuel. The officers reportedly wrote a statement implicating the traveller after he refused to sign one himself.

In Osun State, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 11, Bassey Ewah, ordered the immediate release of a student following a viral video depicting an alleged assault by operatives of the Zone 11 Cybercrime Unit in Ede. Following a meeting with student representatives, Ewah promised a thorough investigation into the manhandling of the student and emphasized the necessity of professionalism and accountability within the force.
