Nigeria Police launch campaign against political and digital thuggery
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has launched a national advocacy campaign titled ‘My Future Is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery’ to sensitize Nigerian youths ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue, Disu warned young people against being recruited by political actors for electoral violence and digital harassment. He emphasized that while politicians often reconcile after elections, the youths involved in violence face lasting consequences, including death, permanent injury, or criminal prosecution. He urged citizens to invest their energy in entrepreneurship, education, and innovation rather than being used as instruments of social disorder.
The Nasarawa State Police Command has also implemented this campaign locally in Lafia. Commissioner of Police Shetima Mohammed, representing the IGP, stressed that security is a collective responsibility involving government, communities, and citizens. The local initiative specifically targets ‘digital thuggery,’ warning against the misuse of social media for spreading misinformation, disinformation, cyberbullying, and incitement.
