Nigeria Police leadership addresses state police reforms and 2027 election security

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has assured members of the Nigeria Police Force that the proposed establishment of state police will not negatively impact their jobs, ranks, or professional standing. Disu stated that the Nigeria Police Force will remain the nation’s primary policing institution, with state police intended to complement rather than replace the federal force. Under the proposed structure, the federal police would retain responsibility for national, inter-state, and specialized security operations.

In a separate development regarding electoral security, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olohundare Jimoh emphasized the need for professionalism, neutrality, and collaboration among security agencies to ensure the credibility of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a training program in Lagos, Jimoh urged personnel to remain apolitical and respect the rights of citizens while working alongside other agencies to secure the pre-election, campaign, and election day phases.
