Nigeria police seize over 130 vehicles in crackdown on illegal number plates

The Nigerian Police Force intensified a nationwide crackdown on vehicles with illegal or obscured registration plates. In Cross River State, police impounded 25 vehicles on 3 July 2026 in Calabar, citing a directive from Inspector‑General Olatunji Disu. Police Public Relations Officer Sunday Eitokpah said the operation aims to make vehicles easier to identify and prevent criminals from using unregistered or disguised plates.

Separate operations in Jigawa and Kano states, branded “Operation Clean Plates,” resulted in the seizure of 105 vehicles and the arraignment of 24 traffic offenders. Kano Commissioner Ibrahim Adamu Bakori reported that 81 vehicles were impounded there, and three additional vehicles were intercepted after occupants failed to explain their ownership. Both commands emphasized that the enforcement will continue to improve public safety, strengthen security, and aid crime detection.

Officials urged motorists to ensure proper registration and visible standard number plates, remove any coverings, and cooperate with police efforts.
