Nigeria political landscape shifts ahead of 2027 elections

As Nigeria approaches the January 2027 elections, political analysts suggest that ethnicity and religion may play a more significant role in voter decision-making than economic considerations.

Incumbent President Bola Tinubu faces a complex landscape characterized by a worsening security crisis involving kidnappings and insurgent violence, alongside economic reforms that have yet to improve living standards for much of the population. Despite these challenges and the presence of popular political challengers, particularly in northern states, Tinubu has maintained a composed stance regarding his re-election prospects.

The Political Intelligence Group (PIG) noted in its October electoral map that the All Progressives Congress (APC) currently leads with 19 states, though this is a decrease from its September assessment. The group identified several key developments influencing the political climate, including controversies over presidential absenteeism, renewed campaigns regarding fuel subsidies by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and internal confrontations between APC governors and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
