Nigeria political parties prepare for 2027 elections

Political parties in Nigeria are beginning to organize structures for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has become the first major party to unveil its presidential campaign council, appointing former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari as director-general. The APC's strategy appears to involve selecting leadership from high-vote zones to maximize electoral leverage.

Other major contenders include the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with Atiku Abubakar, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) featuring Peter Obi, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with Ademola Adewole. The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has named Donald Duke as its presidential candidate.

However, the effectiveness of upcoming nationwide rallies may be hindered by the poor condition of Nigeria's road infrastructure. Deteriorating highways, such as the Abuja-Lokoja, Benin-Auchi, and Itu-Calabar routes, pose significant logistical challenges. While party leaders often travel by air, the mobilization of thousands of supporters via road is expected to be complicated by these failed road projects and increased accident risks.
