Atiku Abubakar challenges President Tinubu over UNGA absences
Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has launched a series of criticisms against President Bola Tinubu, focusing on his repeated absence from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Atiku, noting that Tinubu has missed three consecutive sessions, questioned whether the President's history with U.S. law enforcement affects Nigeria's diplomacy and criticized the use of $9 million for American lobbyists while the President remains absent from New York.
Atiku further alleged that Tinubu violated the Nigerian Constitution by failing to formally transmit a declaration of his annual leave to the National Assembly, which would trigger the Vice President's role as Acting President. In response, the Presidency and Information Minister Mohammed Idris clarified that Tinubu is on annual leave and has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead the Nigerian delegation to the 81st UNGA.
In separate developments, Minister Festus Keyamo criticized Atiku for being disrespectful by referring to the President as 'Bola' during a press conference. Additionally, Atiku expressed concern over poverty in mining communities and offered to fund the education of Yusuf Aliyu, a teenage artisanal miner in Niger State whose video went viral.
