Nigeria power grid suffers partial collapse, forcing load shedding

Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) in Nigeria have commenced load shedding following a partial collapse of the national power grid. At one point, power generation plummeted to as low as 700MW, before rising to 1,132.02MW and later reaching 1,793.79MW as authorities worked to stabilize the system.

Real-time data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed several major generating plants recording zero output during the disturbance. The Jebba Hydroelectric Power Plant was identified as the largest contributor at 483MW, followed by Omotosho at 162.80MW. Other plants, including Egbin, Kainji, and Shiroro, recorded no generation during the peak of the instability.

Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) confirmed that while overall distribution across its network has shown signs of improvement due to increased allocation from the national grid, load shedding remains active in certain areas. The instability has raised renewed concerns regarding the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, which has faced frequent system disturbances and grid collapses.
