Nigeria praised by EITI for improved extractive sector transparency

Assessors from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) have commended Nigeria for improvements in systematic disclosures within its extractive sector. Following a five-day in-country validation mission held from August 10 to 14, the mission team praised the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) for its coordinated stakeholder consultations and high-quality data.

Mission leader Riley Zecca highlighted that the improved access to information allows assessors to evaluate Nigeria’s progress with confidence. He encouraged the country to institutionalize these disclosures to ensure real-time transparency and public accountability. EITI Africa Country Director Gilbert Makore specifically noted the unique engagement with the National Assembly, including executive sessions and public hearings, as evidence of Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive dialogue.

A draft validation report is expected to be shared with the NEITI Board within three weeks. Following a one-month response period for Nigeria, the final report will be presented at the EITI Global Conference in Brussels this October.
