Nigeria inaugurates committee for 66th Independence Anniversary
The Nigerian federal government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to organize the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary. Chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, the committee is tasked with coordinating a series of events to commemorate the nation’s independence from colonial rule.
Officials have indicated that the celebrations will be low-key. The program is scheduled to begin with a World Press Conference on September 24, followed by a Juma’at Service on September 25 and an interdenominational church service on September 27. A public lecture is planned for September 30, and President Bola Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on October 1.
Senator Akume stated that the anniversary serves as an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices and legacies of the nation’s founding fathers and heroines. Additionally, the administration intends to use the occasion to highlight its ongoing reform initiatives and achievements amidst current socio-economic challenges.
