Nigeria Presidency disputes Makinde's NLNG dividend claims

The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed claims made by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde that the Federal Government is withholding ₦250 billion in Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) dividends from each state until after the 2027 general elections.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, characterized the allegations as false and mathematically implausible. He noted that a ₦250 billion allocation to each of the 36 states would total ₦9 trillion, a figure that excludes the Federal Government, the Federal Capital Territory, and 774 local government councils.

Under the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue-sharing formula, states receive 26.72 percent of distributable revenue. The Presidency argued that for states to receive ₦9 trillion, the total NLNG dividend payout would need to exceed ₦33.68 trillion (approximately $25 billion) in a single declaration. Historical data shows NLNG has paid approximately $21.5 billion in total dividends over the last 25 years, with less than $3 billion realized since President Bola Tinubu assumed office.
