Nigeria President Tinubu Accused of Imprisoning Opposition Candidate Sowore

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, accused President Bola Tinubu of sending him to prison and highlighted what he called impossible bail conditions for detainees at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja. Sowore said he met inmate Haruna Garba Gololo, who remained in custody for weeks after being granted bail because he could not meet the court‑imposed surety requirements.

He also cited the cases of David Nwokorie, who faced a bail condition requiring a Level 16 civil servant and a serving army colonel as sureties, and Emorioloye Owolemi, prosecuted for alleged cyberstalking. Sowore disclosed that of the 1,115 inmates at Kuje, about 817 are awaiting trial and 47 have tuberculosis. The Presidency, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Nigeria Police Force and the Minister of Interior have not responded to his statements.
