APC chairman Nentawe Yilwatda defends President Tinubu amid opposition accusations
APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda repeatedly rejected opposition claims that President Bola Tinubu is too tired to lead and that the ruling party engineered former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi’s series of party switches. Speaking on Channels Television, Yilwatda said Tinubu works from “morning till night” and asked “Is he going for boxing or the 100 metres?” while pointing to infrastructure projects such as the Lagos‑Calabar Coastal Highway, new seaports and the NELFUND programme as evidence of the administration’s activity.
Yilwatda also asserted that the APC “had no role in Peter Obi’s party switches,” noting that Obi’s moves pre‑date the party’s time in government. The party’s stance was echoed in other APC statements, including a warning from Yilwatda that political appointees must “mobilise for APC or resign.”
The dispute spilled onto social media when APC Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga posted, then deleted, an X message accusing Obi of lying about the religious background of his former cabinet members. Opposition figures responded, with the Nigeria Democratic Congress demanding the resignation of Lagos State Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai for attending a partisan City Boy Movement event. The Obidient movement also challenged Tinubu to a televised debate with Obi. These exchanges underscore the heightened political tension ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
