Nigeria's ADC Calls for Fresh Process After WhatsApp Votes Used to Pass State Police Bill
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused Nigeria’s House of Representatives of breaching constitutional procedures in the passage of the State Police Constitution Alteration Bill. ADC officials say the required constitutional threshold was achieved by counting votes transmitted via WhatsApp from members who were absent from the chamber and by including legislators who had signed the attendance register but were not present when the vote was taken. In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party demanded that the bill be recommitted to a fresh, transparent and inclusive legislative process with full clause‑by‑clause consideration and public scrutiny. While the ADC supports the creation of a state police force to address Nigeria’s security challenges, it insists that constitutional amendments must follow strict procedures and cannot be done by “convenience.” The allegations refer to the House proceedings on 23 July 2026.
