Nigeria presidential working group submits National Policing Bill 2026
A presidential working group has submitted the draft National Policing Bill 2026 and 29 consequential amendment bills to the Federal Ministry of Justice for validation. The proposed legislation aims to restructure Nigeria’s policing architecture by establishing a dual system consisting of both Federal and State Police Services.
Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the working group, stated that the Ministry of Justice is tasked with reviewing the drafts to ensure they meet legislative standards and remain consistent with existing laws. The ministry is expected to return the validated bills by October 30, 2026.
Following the ministry's review, the working group will conduct a final assessment before presenting the bills to President Bola Tinubu. The implementation of this reform is linked to the ongoing consideration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by state Houses of Assembly, which must be completed before the policing bill can be transmitted to the National Assembly.
