Islamic clerics urge President Tinubu to drop 2027 re-election bid

More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Tinubu to abandon his bid for re-election in the 2027 general elections. The group issued a communiqué following a national conference held in Kano State.

The clerics expressed dissatisfaction with the current administration, citing worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity, and the mass exodus of skilled professionals. They specifically criticized several government policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies, changes to the naira exchange-rate regime, increases in electricity tariffs, and various tax reforms.

The communiqué stated that the government has prioritized revenue generation over the well-being of citizens, noting that the rising cost of living and unemployment are threatening lives. The participants concluded that it would be inappropriate for the current administration to seek another term unless there is a significant reversal of these economic policies and the introduction of measures to provide relief to struggling households.
