Nigeria Prioritises Land Administration Reforms to Boost Affordable Housing
The Federal Government of Nigeria announced that it will prioritise reforms to land administration as a means to expand affordable‑housing access for low‑income earners and informal workers. The announcement was made by Minister of Housing and Urban Development Muttaqha Darma at the 20th Africa International Housing Show on 16 July 2026.
The minister highlighted that rapid urbanisation has widened the housing deficit and that many citizens lack secure land titles, mortgage financing and clear acquisition procedures. The government plans to simplify land‑related processes and adopt digital technologies such as geographic information systems, digital cadastral mapping and electronic land records through the Nigerian Land Titling, Registration and Documentation Programme. Senior officials including Temitope Pemi, Collins Alabi and Dr Shuaib Belgore underscored the need for accessible, documented and serviced land and called for collaboration with development partners, financial institutions and the private sector.
