Nigeria: Professor warns state police alone cannot solve insecurity

Professor of Criminology Etannibi Alemika has cautioned that establishing state police in Nigeria will not resolve the nation’s insecurity unless accompanied by improved governance and social development.

Speaking at the 10th postgraduate convocation of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in affiliation with the University of Benin, Alemika argued that insecurity extends beyond physical violence and property loss. He noted that factors such as unemployment, poverty, inequality, inadequate healthcare, and poor education are fundamental threats to human security.

Alemika warned that introducing state-controlled police without adequate safeguards could exacerbate existing crises, particularly if governors exert undue influence over state institutions. He suggested that Nigeria should focus on better coordination among existing security providers—including communities, religious organizations, and vigilantes—rather than solely focusing on decentralization. He cited international models in countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, where authorities have consolidated structures to improve administration.
