Nigeria promotes heart health awareness and preventive care

To commemorate World Heart Day, health organizations and private entities in Nigeria are intensifying efforts to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and disease prevention.

Dr. Kingsley Akinroye, Executive Director of the Nigerian Heart Foundation, urged citizens—particularly young people—to adopt healthy lifestyles to combat heart disease. He identified five primary risk factors: cigarette smoking, unhealthy diets, inadequate physical activity, alcohol consumption, and air pollution. Akinroye emphasized that heart disease is a “silent killer” where symptoms are often ignored until the condition becomes severe.

In a separate initiative, Jumia Nigeria partnered with St. Emmanuel Hospital to provide open health checks to the public in the Isolo area of Lagos. The program offered basic health assessments and facilitated discussions with medical professionals to encourage proactive health monitoring and community wellbeing.
